Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response attempts to address the task but fails to accurately interpret the provided data. The student confuses the years (1975 and 2006) and misinterprets the age categories, leading to factual inaccuracies. While the response identifies some trends, the lack of clarity regarding the data points makes it difficult to follow. The overview is confusing, as it mentions 'seven ages' and refers to data not clearly supported by the graph. To improve, you must focus on accurately reporting the figures and trends shown in the visual, ensuring that your summary reflects the actual data provided rather than making general, unsupported statements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' is mechanical and often used incorrectly, as the content following these markers does not always logically follow the previous point. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to understand which age group or gender is being discussed. The transition between ideas is often abrupt, and the lack of clear, accurate data reporting hinders the overall flow of the essay.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive. There are several instances of word-choice errors, such as 'highest craze' and 'inhabitants who are from 70 and above', which are not appropriate for a formal report. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe trends (e.g., 'drastically increased' is used where the data might show a different trend). While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the misuse of certain terms prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on academic collocations for describing data would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the bar graph below compare'), incorrect preposition usage, and awkward sentence structures. While there is an attempt to use complex sentences, they are often faulty or poorly constructed. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the placement of commas and the handling of numerical data. To improve, focus on basic sentence construction and ensure that subjects and verbs agree, as well as proofreading for common errors in tense and word order.
