Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar charts illustrate the proportion of people who held full driving licences in Great Britain by age and genders

Overall, the percentage of people who held full driving licences generally increased in all age groups except for the 21-29 years old men. Even though the women figures increased more noticeable than men's data, men's data still larger than women's in every age group.

2006 witnessed the significant growth of the full driving licences of men who was 70 and over at nearly 80% compared to just 30% in 1975/76, and overtook the 21-29 age group which was decreased to 70%. While the younger group slightly increased, older group's data increased much more dramatic with the 50-59 and 60-69 increased to 85% which made them surpassed the 40-49 group to became the largest data in the chart.

In 1975/76, the 30-39 group's figure was the largest but the 40-49 group overtook them at 80%. Women chart also had the same pattern as men's with elderly people group had more noticeable increase . 60-69 group's data increased the most from 18% to 65%, and surpassed the percentage of 21-29 group which increased much slower.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response provides a clear overview and identifies key trends, such as the general increase in licence holders across age groups. However, the analysis is occasionally imprecise. For instance, the claim that 'men's data still larger than women's in every age group' is a broad generalization that could be better supported by specific data points. The description of the 2006 data is slightly confusing, as the prompt refers to 1975/76 and 2006 as two distinct periods, not a single year. While the main features are covered, the reporting of figures is sometimes inconsistent, which limits the clarity of the comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific trends. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Overall', 'While', and 'In 1975/76', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Women chart also had the same pattern as men's'. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the internal structure of the sentences sometimes hinders the flow, making the relationship between the data points less smooth than it could be.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends (e.g., 'increased', 'surpassed', 'overtook'). However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'women figures' instead of 'women's figures' and 'largest data' instead of 'highest percentage'. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, relying on repetitive structures to describe changes. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise terminology for describing statistical trends and ensure better control over collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('men who was 70', 'older group's data increased much more dramatic') and article usage ('the women figures', 'the 21-29 age group which was decreased'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent and occur throughout the text. The student needs to focus on basic grammatical accuracy, specifically regarding verb tenses and the correct use of adjectives versus adverbs when describing trends.
