Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The graph illustrates the proportion of people having a complete driving license in Great Britain in terms of age and sex.
From the broader perspective, it is readily apparent that the women had a big amount of change in percentage in terms of holding driving licenses as compared to twenty decades ago. In contrast, looking at the male section, it can be seen that there has been significant growth in the older age of the people.
It is observed that women have become more independent in 2006 as compared to the women of 1975 and 1976. There has been a 10% rise in teenagers having driving licenses. A 20% hike in the percentage of age groups between 21 and 29 and senior citizens above 70. An almost 20% rise has been seen in the age group between 30 and 39. However, it has also been observed that a greater than 25% has risen in remaining age groups.
Now looking to the men, the people from 60 to 69 and citizens above 70 have experienced a rise of 25% and 23%, respectively. A 10% rise has been seen in the age group of 50 to 59. The only changes that have not taken place are in the age group of 30 to 39. 7% of people have decreased in the group of 21 to 29. 3% more teenagers are having driving lincenses in 2006.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the general increase in license holders across most age groups. However, the analysis is somewhat mechanical, listing percentages rather than synthesizing the data into clear trends. The reference to 'twenty decades ago' is factually incorrect based on the provided data (1975/76 vs 2006). Additionally, the summary lacks a clear overview of the most significant trends, such as the narrowing gap between men and women. While the task is addressed, the lack of precision in data interpretation and the inclusion of inaccurate time references limit the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction followed by separate sections for women and men. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive and mechanical (e.g., 'It is observed that', 'A 10% rise has been seen'). The transition between the overview and the body paragraphs is abrupt. While the progression of ideas is generally clear, the internal cohesion within paragraphs could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the data points more fluidly rather than listing them as isolated sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks sophistication. Phrases like 'big amount of change' and 'hike in the percentage' are somewhat informal or imprecise. There are also minor errors in word choice, such as 'male section' instead of 'male category' or 'men's data'. The spelling error 'lincenses' is noted. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing trends and data fluctuations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'a greater than 25% has risen' (incorrect subject-verb agreement/word order) and 'the people from 60 to 69... have experienced a rise'. The phrase 'twenty decades ago' is a significant error in logic and expression. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. More attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions would improve the accuracy of your writing.
