Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the data and makes relevant comparisons between age groups and sexes. However, the overview is somewhat limited, and there are inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, stating that women aged 17-20 and over 70 'climbed to 40% in 2002' is problematic as the graph does not provide data for 2002, and the interpretation of the trends for some age groups is imprecise. While the main trends are identified, the lack of precision in data extraction and the inclusion of non-existent data points prevent a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is organized into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on women and men respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'By comparison', and 'Similarly' are used to link ideas. However, the progression within the final paragraph is slightly disjointed due to awkward phrasing and grammatical errors, which occasionally makes the flow of information feel mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure could be improved by ensuring that comparisons between the two genders are more integrated rather than treated in separate, isolated blocks.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts to use descriptive language such as 'increased significantly', 'dramatic increase', and 'rose sharply'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'woman population' instead of 'female population' and 'the figure of women' which is slightly repetitive. Some phrasing is also non-standard, such as 'remained identical to nearly 40%'. While the range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main points, the errors in word choice and the lack of precision in describing the data trends limit the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('men aged 50-59... was around 75%'), incorrect preposition usage ('in before increasing'), and awkward sentence construction ('the figures remained identical to nearly 40% to aged 17-20'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to demonstrate a lack of control over complex structures, which is characteristic of the 6.0 band.
