Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The bar graphs illustrate the proportion of individuals holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.
Overall, the proportion of women with full car driving credentials increased substantially over the period given while the percentage increase in men was minimal. Additionally, more males had operator permits as compared to women.
In 1975/76, fewer women had driving credentials as compared to 2006. Those aged 30-39 years old accounted for the highest proportion of approximately 50% in 1975/76 while the ones with 70 years and below recorded less than 5% during the same period. These figures went up significantly in 2006 across all the ages. The females aged between 40-49 and 30-39 years accounted for nearly 80% while those with 17-20 years and 70 years and above had around 30%.
From the men's graph, all the age groups showed an upward trend except those aged 21-29 who recorded around 77% in 1975/76 and nearly 67 in 2006, while those between 30-39 remained relatively constant maintaining slightly above 80%. The highest percentage recorded was around 90% by those aged between 50-59 years while the lowest was slightly below 40% by 17-20 age brackets.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively identifies the main features and trends. You have successfully highlighted the overall increase in female licence holders and compared the two years provided. However, the analysis of the data could be more precise. For instance, you mention that men aged 21-29 recorded 'nearly 67' in 2006, but the graph shows a more specific figure. Additionally, while you cover the main trends, some comparisons between the sexes could be more explicitly stated to fully satisfy the 'make comparisons where relevant' requirement. Overall, the response is well-focused and covers the key information required by the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on female and male data respectively. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Additionally', and 'while' helps to guide the reader through the information. However, the transition between the overview and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally clear, although some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to the way data points are listed. Overall, the structure is effective and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'proportion', 'substantially', 'credentials', and 'upward trend'. This is sufficient to convey the information clearly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'operator permits' or 'credentials' to describe a driving licence, which are slightly unnatural in this context. However, these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'a significant rise' or 'a marginal decline'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'the ones with 70 years and below' (should be 'those aged 70 and below') and 'nearly 67' (missing the unit of measurement). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. You have shown the ability to use complex structures, such as 'while those between 30-39 remained relatively constant', which is a positive feature. The errors present are non-systematic and do not hinder the reader's understanding.
