Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While the student attempts to describe the trends, the analysis is superficial and repetitive. Key features, such as the peak percentages or the specific age groups where the gap between sexes is widest, are not clearly identified. The summary lacks a clear overview of the main trends, and the data reporting is fragmented, focusing on individual age brackets rather than synthesizing the information. The response is under-developed and fails to provide a comprehensive summary of the provided graph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into short, choppy paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is weak. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences or ideas, making the writing feel like a list of observations rather than a cohesive report. The referencing is often unclear, and the transition between age groups is mechanical. While there is a basic attempt at paragraphing, the lack of logical flow and the repetitive structure of the sentences hinder the overall readability of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. The student relies on basic verbs like 'increase', 'rise', and 'grow' to describe trends, often using them incorrectly (e.g., 'men are still rise'). There is no attempt to use a range of vocabulary suitable for describing data, such as 'fluctuate', 'peak', 'decline', or 'proportion'. The word choice is often inaccurate, such as 'catching' instead of 'holding' or 'obtaining' a licence. The lack of variety and the frequent misuse of words significantly limit the ability to convey information precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting almost entirely of simple, repetitive sentence structures. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and word form, such as 'men are still increases' and 'men are significant'. The use of articles and prepositions is inconsistent throughout the text. Complex sentence structures are absent, and the persistent errors in basic grammar make the text difficult to follow. The lack of control over basic sentence construction prevents the student from achieving a higher band score.
