Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The bar charts show the percentages of men and women in Great Britain who held a full car driving licence in 1975/76 and 2006, according to their age.
Overall, the percentage of male licence holders was higher than that of females in most age groups. However, the proportion of women with driving licences increased considerably between 1975/76 and 2006. In both years, younger and older people generally had lower percentages than people in the middle age groups.
In 1975/76, around 70% of men aged 17–20 had a driving licence, while the figure for women was only about 10%. Among men aged 21–29, the percentage was approximately 80%, compared with about 40% for women. The figures for men aged 30–39 and 40–49 were around 85% and 80% respectively.
By 2006, the percentage of male licence holders had increased slightly among younger people, but it was lower among some older age groups. For women, there was a significant rise. Around 75–80% of women aged 30–49 had a licence in 2006. Even among women aged 60–69, the figure reached about 65%, compared with only around 15% in 1975/76.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main trends and making relevant comparisons between the two years and the two genders. You have successfully highlighted the significant increase in female licence holders and contrasted this with the relatively stable or slightly declining figures for men in certain age groups. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key features are supported by data; for instance, you mentioned that younger and older people had lower percentages, which is a good observation, but ensure that the data points provided are consistently accurate across the entire report.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively by time period. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'compared with', and 'in contrast' are used appropriately to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the paragraphing is logical. The use of referencing is clear, and the flow between sentences is natural, which helps the reader follow the comparison of data points without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe trends, such as 'increased considerably', 'significant rise', and 'figure reached'. The language is precise and appropriate for an academic report. There is a good awareness of collocation, and the vocabulary used is natural and fits the context well. To move towards a higher band, you could incorporate slightly more sophisticated or varied synonyms for 'percentage' or 'figure' to avoid repetition, although the current range is already quite effective for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. You have demonstrated control over complex structures, such as using subordinate clauses ('while the figure for women was only about 10%') and comparative structures effectively. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The sentences are clear and error-free for the most part, demonstrating a high level of grammatical control suitable for an academic writing task.
