Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar graphs illustrate the proportion of individuals holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.
Overall, the proportion of women with full car driving credentials increased substantially over the period given while the percentage increase in men was minimal. Additionally, more males had operator permits as compared to women.
In 1975/76, fewer women had driving credentials as compared to 2006. Those aged 30-39 years old accounted for the highest proportion of approximately 50% in 1975/76 while the ones with 70 years and below recorded less than 5% during the same period. These figures went up significantly in 2006 across all the ages. The females aged between 40-49 and 30-39 years accounted for nearly 80% while those with 17-20 years and 70 years and above had around 30%.
From the men's graph, all the age groups showed an upward trend except those aged 21-29 who recorded around 77% in 1975/76 and nearly 67 in 2006, while those between 30-39 remained relatively constant maintaining slightly above 80%. The highest percentage recorded was around 90% by those aged between 50-59 years while the lowest was slightly below 40% by 17-20 age brackets.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response provides a clear overview of the main trends, noting the general increase in licence holders and the gender disparity. You successfully identified key features, such as the significant growth in female licence holders and the specific age-related trends for men. However, the report could be improved by more precise data selection. For instance, stating 'nearly 80%' for females aged 30-49 is a good approximation, but the comparison between 1975/76 and 2006 could be more analytical by highlighting the magnitude of change more consistently across all age groups. Overall, you covered the requirements well, though some data points could be presented with greater clarity to ensure the reader can easily follow the comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on female and male data respectively. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Overall,' 'Additionally,' and 'In 1975/76.' However, the transition between the female and male paragraphs is slightly abrupt. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons between the two groups are more explicitly linked within the body paragraphs rather than just presenting the data for each gender in isolation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with some precision. Phrases like 'proportion of individuals,' 'substantially,' and 'upward trend' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'driving credentials' or 'operator permits,' which are not the most natural collocations for 'driving licences.' While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the repetition of 'accounted for' and 'recorded' limits the sophistication of the lexical range. To improve, try to vary your verbs and nouns to describe statistical changes more dynamically.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You show good control over basic grammar, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. For example, 'the ones with 70 years and below' is slightly awkward phrasing, and 'nearly 67 in 2006' is missing a unit of measurement (percent). There are also minor issues with preposition use and article placement. However, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and you demonstrate the ability to handle complex comparisons without significant grammatical breakdown. Focusing on refining these minor inaccuracies will help you achieve a higher score.
