Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph gives us information about people driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.

Overall, we can seen that the percentage of people holding driving licences increased from 1975/76 to 2006. Men had a higher percentage of driving licence holders than women in most age groups. However, the difference between men and women became smaller in 2006.

in 1975/76, around 80% of men whose age was around 30–39 had a driving licence, while the same for women was about 50%. The percentage was also high among men aged 40–49 and 50–59, at around 80% and 75%. In comparison, women in 40-49 and 50-59 age groups had licences.

In 2006, the percentage of licence holders increased for both men and women. Around 90% of men aged 60–69 had a driving licence. Among women, the same also increased to around 80% for those age group 30–49. The percentage of older women with licences also increased compared with 1975/76.

I would like to conclude by seeing the above bar graph that the percentage of women in 2006 who have driving licence increased alot in comparison to 1975/1976. same in men also the percentage increased in 2006 but in different age groups only. percentage of people holding driving license aged 21-29 was high in 1975/76 than in 2006.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the graphs, identifying the general upward trend and the narrowing gap between genders. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, in the second paragraph, you mention women in the 40-49 and 50-59 age groups but fail to provide the corresponding data points, leaving the information incomplete. The conclusion introduces new data points (the 21-29 age group) which should have been integrated into the main body paragraphs rather than the summary. To improve, ensure all key trends are supported by specific data from the graph and avoid introducing new information in the final paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition 'In comparison' is used, but the connection between sentences could be smoother. The final paragraph is particularly weak in terms of cohesion, as it feels like a collection of disjointed observations rather than a synthesized conclusion. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in contrast') would help improve the flow of ideas between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. You rely heavily on basic phrasing such as 'the percentage of... increased' and 'had a driving licence'. There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'the same for women was about 50%' and 'increased alot'. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to data description, such as 'witnessed a significant rise', 'remained relatively stable', or 'a marginal difference'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary is limited.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. You have several grammatical errors, such as 'we can seen' (should be 'we can see'), 'whose age was' (should be 'aged'), and 'same in men also' (which is grammatically incomplete). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure in the final paragraph is quite fragmented. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and more formal sentence construction will significantly improve your accuracy.
