Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar graph illustrates the proportion of people holding full driving licences in Great Britain, categorised by age and gender.

Overall, the proportion of both men and women holding driving licences increased considerably between 1975/76 and 2006, with the largest increases generally occurring among women.

In 2006, around 90% of men aged 50–59 held driving licences, making this the highest figure among male age groups. In contrast, the 70-and-over age group had the lowest proportion of licence holders in 1975/76, at around 27%. Meanwhile, the proportion of 30–39-year-olds remained relatively stable between 1975/76 and 2006. Among men aged 70 and over, the figure rose from approximately 37% in 1975/76 to around 75%in 2006, more than doubling over the period.

Among women, the proportion of licence holders increased to around 30% for those aged 70 and over, while the figures for the 60–69 and 50–59 age groups rose to approximately 67% and 73%, respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends and selects relevant data points to support the summary. You successfully identified the general increase in licence holders and made appropriate comparisons between genders and age groups. However, the report is somewhat incomplete. While you cover several age groups, you omit significant data regarding the 17–20 and 21–29 age brackets, which are crucial to the overall picture provided in the graph. To achieve a higher band, ensure you cover all categories or group them more effectively to provide a comprehensive summary of the entire dataset rather than focusing on selected segments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information by gender. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast,' 'Meanwhile,' and 'respectively' effectively to link information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific data analysis. To improve, ensure that the transition between the general trends and the specific data points is smoother, and try to avoid slightly repetitive sentence structures when introducing new data points.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information clearly. Phrases like 'proportion of people,' 'categorised by,' and 'remained relatively stable' are used accurately. You also show an ability to use comparative language, such as 'more than doubling.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic descriptive terms. To reach a higher band, incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to trends and data, such as 'fluctuated,' 'peaked,' or 'marginal,' and ensure precise collocation when describing statistical changes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use subordinate clauses effectively, such as 'making this the highest figure among male age groups.' Grammar is generally accurate, and punctuation is handled well. There is a minor spacing error ('75%in'), but this does not impede communication. The control of tense is consistent with the requirements of the task. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice or more varied conditional or participial phrases, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
