Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph below illustrates the ratio of people holding full driving licenses in Britain by age and gender.

Overall, mostly the car licenses was held by men in middle age. While for women it was also held by middle aged women. However, the ratio of men accounted more than women in all periods of age and time.

In detail, the percentage of men between 17 and 20 was just below than 40 percent in both 1975 and 2006. While for women it was 20% in 1975 to 76 and approximately 40% in 2006. Furthermore, the ratio of license holders for middle aged women was between 60 and 80 percent in 2006 and for men it was just above than 80%. In 1975 to 76 the ratio of men was between 60% and 80% age between 21 to 60 years. On the other hand, for women it was approximately 40%. However, the ratio of old age people keeping license was more in men then women like it was just 20 percent for women and 80% for men.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the graph, such as the overall higher percentage of male drivers and the trends across age groups. However, the analysis is somewhat inconsistent. For instance, the description of the 17-20 age group is slightly inaccurate regarding the 1975 data, and the comparison of 'old age' groups lacks precision. The overview is present but could be more clearly articulated. To improve, ensure that data points are cited more accurately and that the comparison between the two years (1975-76 and 2006) is structured more logically to highlight the significant shifts in driving licence ownership over time.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs, which provides a clear structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'While for women', 'Furthermore', 'On the other hand'). Some sentences lack smooth transitions, making the progression of ideas feel slightly disjointed. Referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when discussing age ranges. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall flow and coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There is a reliance on basic terms like 'ratio' (which is used incorrectly in place of 'percentage' or 'proportion') and 'old age people'. The phrasing 'accounted more than' is also non-standard. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'remained stable', or 'a significant increase', and ensure that collocations are used accurately to convey the trends shown in the graph.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'mostly the car licenses was held' (subject-verb agreement), 'accounted more than' (incorrect verb usage), and 'just above than' (incorrect comparative structure). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction often feels awkward. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement, correct comparative forms, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with grammatical accuracy to avoid these recurring errors.
