The graphs below show the percentage of people holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar charts compare the percentages of men and women in Great Britain who held full driving licences in seven age groups in 1975/76 and 2006.

Overall, men were more likely than women to hold driving licences in both years. However, the proportion of female licence holders increased considerably, reducing the gender gap by 2006.

In 1975/76, around 70% of men aged 70 and over had licences, compared with only about 10% of women. Among men aged 60–69 and 50–59, the figures were approximately 60% and 75%, respectively. For younger men, the proportions were generally between 40% and 65%.

By 2006, male figures had risen to about 80–90% in most age groups, although only around 35–40% of 17–20 year-olds held licences. The increase among women was more noticeable. For example, the figure for women aged 60–69 rose from roughly 30% to 70%, while those aged 40–49 reached almost 90%. Among 17–20-year-olds, it increased slightly to around 30%.
