Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given bar graph illustrates a demographic breakdown of full car driving licence holders in Great Britain over the period of 1975 to 1976 and 2006.
Overall, a significant number of individuals who owned a licence was male. However the proportion of licence holders had increased in 2006 except once, when male licence holders fell in 1975/76 under the age group of 21-29 years.
Highest proportion held by males within the 50-59 age group in 2006 by 90% while least is accounted under the 17-20 age group by 39%. Among the women, a substantial licence holders were between 40-49 age with a figure of 80%. It is evident from the chart that lowest car drivers were senior citizens (70 and over).
Nevertheless the graph shows a rapid increase on the number of drivers from 17 to 20 age group and hiked around 40-49 years. Later it decline gradually. Hence the graph is fluctuating over the period. It is observed that the only time the licence holders volume remained almost the same is among the men within the age group of 30-39 years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the data, such as the overall higher percentage of male licence holders and the age-related trends. However, the summary is somewhat inaccurate in its interpretation of the data. For instance, stating that the proportion of licence holders increased in 2006 'except once' is confusing and not clearly supported by the provided figures. Additionally, the description of the age groups is occasionally imprecise, and the comparison between the two time periods is underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure that the data points selected are accurate and that the comparison between the years 1975/76 and 2006 is more explicit and logically structured.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the logical progression within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and a lack of clear cohesive devices. For example, the transition 'Nevertheless the graph shows...' does not logically follow the previous paragraph. While there is an attempt to use linking words, the flow is occasionally mechanical or confusing. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., 'the latter group') and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. There are instances of awkward word choices, such as 'hiked around 40-49 years' and 'licence holders volume'. The phrase 'a substantial licence holders' is grammatically incorrect. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'peaked at' instead of 'hiked' and 'proportion of licence holders' instead of 'licence holders volume'. Expanding your range of reporting verbs and nouns will help convey information more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'Highest proportion held by males... by 90%' (missing subject/verb) and 'a substantial licence holders were between 40-49 age' (incorrect article usage and preposition). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for articles and prepositions will lead to better accuracy.
