Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The bar chart compares the percentages of men and women in different age groups who held a full car driving licence in Great Britain in 1975/76 and 2005.

Overall, the proportion of people with driving licences increased considerably between the two periods, particularly among women. In 2005, men generally had higher rates then women in most age groups, although the difference was smaller among younger and middle-aged people. The highest proportions were recorded among people aged 30-69.

In 1975/76 around 90% of men aged 20-29 had a full driving licence, compared with approximately 65% of women. For men aged 30-59, the figure was also very high, at about 80-90%. Among women, however, the percentages were considerably lower, especially in the older age groups. Only around 30% of women aged 60-69 and about 10% of those aged 70 and over held a licence.

By 2005, the proportion of female licence holders had risen markedly. Approximately 80% of women aged 30-49 had a licence, while the figure of those aged 50-59 was about 75% and 60-69 was about reaching 65% and 70 overall was reaching 25%.

Overall, the chart shows a clear rise in driving-licence ownership among women and a more moderate change among men.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered both years and made relevant comparisons between age groups and sexes. However, the final paragraph is somewhat repetitive, as it restates the overview provided in the introduction. To improve, ensure that all data points are clearly supported by the figures provided in the prompt. For instance, in the final paragraph, the phrasing 'about reaching 65%' is slightly vague. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively, providing a well-structured summary of the key features.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that group information by time period. You use cohesive devices such as 'In 1975/76', 'By 2005', and 'however' to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different time periods. The progression of ideas is clear, and the relationship between the data sets is easy to follow. To reach a higher band, ensure that transitions between sentences are even more fluid, avoiding repetitive sentence structures at the start of paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information accurately, using terms like 'proportion', 'considerably', 'markedly', and 'recorded'. There is an awareness of style appropriate for an academic report. However, there are minor inaccuracies in collocation and phrasing, such as 'the figure of those aged 50-59 was about 75% and 60-69 was about reaching 65%'. This sentence structure is slightly clunky and repetitive. Focusing on more precise ways to describe data trends will help elevate your score further.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as 'higher rates then women' (should be 'than') and the slightly awkward phrasing in the final body paragraph regarding the 2005 data. These errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice, to describe the data more dynamically.
