Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The bar charts compare the percentages of men and women in different age groups in Great Britain who held a full driving licence in 1975/76 and 2006.

Overall, men had considerably higher rates of licence ownership than women in 1975/76. However, the proportion of female licence holders increased substantially by 2006, particularly among older age groups. Meanwhile, male figures remained relatively stable.

In 1975/76, around 35% of men aged 17–20 had a licence, compared with approximately 78% of those aged 21–29. The figure then rose to about 85% among 30–39-year-olds and remained high for the next age groups. By 2006, the proportion among men aged 60–69 had increased markedly, from about 60% to 90%, while the figure for those aged 70+ rose from roughly 30% to 75%.

Among women, licence ownership increased dramatically. For example, the proportion of women aged 60–69 rose from about 15% to 65%, while the figure for those aged 70+ increased from approximately 2% to 30%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main features and provided relevant comparisons between the two years and the two genders. The overview clearly captures the significant trend of rising female licence ownership. However, the response is slightly unbalanced; while you provide a good level of detail for the 1975/76 male data and the 2006 trends, some of the data for the 1975/76 female age groups is omitted, and the comparison could be more integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key data points mentioned in the prompt are represented or synthesized more comprehensively to provide a complete picture of the trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information effectively by gender. Cohesive devices such as 'Meanwhile', 'In 1975/76', and 'By 2006' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the data. The progression of ideas is smooth, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. The use of referencing is accurate, and the paragraphing is sufficient. To improve, you could use a wider variety of cohesive devices to link the two body paragraphs more explicitly, further enhancing the flow of the comparison.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data-driven task, using terms like 'considerably higher', 'increased substantially', 'remained relatively stable', and 'increased dramatically'. These collocations are used accurately and help to convey the trends clearly. There is a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for precision. While the vocabulary is effective, it is largely functional. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or varied synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' to avoid repetition and show a more flexible command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your writing displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of comparative clauses ('compared with approximately 78% of those...') and subordinate clauses ('while the figure for those aged 70+ rose...'). The grammar is generally accurate, and there are frequent error-free sentences. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. The control over complex structures is good, and errors are rare and do not impede communication. To reach the highest band, ensure that you continue to maintain this level of accuracy while experimenting with even more varied sentence patterns.
