Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The graphs illustrate the percentage of people in Great Britain who held full car driving licences in 1975/76 and 2006, according to their age and sex.

Overall, the proportion of driving licence holders increased considerably between 1975/76 and 2006 for both men and women. Men generally had higher rates than women, although the gap became smaller over time. The highest percentages were recorded among middle-aged people.

In 1975/76, around 70% of men aged 21–29 held a full driving licence, compared with approximately 50% of women in the same age group. Among men aged 30–39 and 40–49, the figures were about 75% and 80% respectively. For older men, the percentages were lower, at roughly 65% for those aged 50–59 and 60% for those aged 60–69. Only about 30% of men aged 70 and over had licences.

By 2006, the percentage of male licence holders had risen in most age groups, reaching almost 90% among those aged 40–49 and 50–59. The figure for women also increased substantially. For example, among women aged 30–39, it rose to nearly 90%, while around 85% of women aged 40–49 had a licence. Even among women aged 70 and over, the proportion increased to approximately 25–30%.
