Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of people having access to the driving license in two sectors of gender and age in Great Britain from 1976 till 2006. Overall, two main trends can be observed. First is that the proportion of males holding a driving license has been significantly higher. The second is that women, on the other hand, have always been lower in both years, irrespective of the ages.

In terms of males, the year 1975/76 shows a lower proportion having driver's licenses as compared to the year 2006. Ages between 21 and 29 have had the highest number of males having a driver's license, which is 70%, and the lowest has been in the age of 70 and above, which is 32%. This bar chart clearly depicts the rise of holding a driver's license by the year 2006. In the year 2006, the lowest percentage of males has been around 37% in the age range of 17 to 20, while the highest has been 90% in the age range of 50 to 59.

In terms of women, both the years show a lower proportion of women having driver's licenses than the males. The year 1975/76 shows a lower proportion having driver's licenses as compared to the year 2006. The lowest percentage has gone till 3% in the ages between 70 and over. While the highest has been 50% between ages 30 and 39. However, there has been a significant rise in holding driver's licenses by 2006. The highest percentage has reached 80% in the age range of 40 to 49, and the lowest has hit 31% in the age range of 70 and over.

In conclusion, the trend of holding a driver's license has been more in males as compared to women in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the overall trends and specific comparisons between the two years and genders. You successfully identified the general increase in license holders and the gender gap. However, the analysis could be improved by grouping data more effectively rather than listing figures. For instance, instead of detailing every age bracket, you could highlight the most significant shifts, such as the narrowing gap in younger age groups or the peak age ranges. The overview is present but could be more concise to avoid repetition. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each gender, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the analysis. Cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'on the other hand', and 'however' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the 1976 and 2006 data within the body paragraphs could be more integrated to show the progression over time rather than treating them as separate lists of facts.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'illustrates', and 'significant rise'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'having access to the driving license' is slightly unnatural; 'holding a driving license' is more precise. Additionally, phrases like 'the lowest percentage has gone till 3%' are informal. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to trends, such as 'a marked increase', 'a substantial decline', or 'remained relatively stable', rather than relying on basic descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors. For instance, 'the lowest percentage has gone till 3% in the ages between 70 and over' contains awkward phrasing and redundant prepositions. There are also minor issues with article usage and tense consistency, such as 'the year 1975/76 shows a lower proportion'. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication, and you show an attempt at using complex structures, which is sufficient for a band 6.0.
