Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph compares the percentage of men and women drivers holding full car driving license in Great Britain into 7 age groups in two different years 1975/1976 and 2006.

Overall, the percentage of license ownership for both sexes rose significantly over the whole period. However, women experienced a much more dramatic increase than men, significantly narrowing the gender gap by 2006.

In 1975/76 and 2006 men ranging in age from 30-49 remained almost static in figures between 80% to 85%. Similarly, men from 50-69 age showed a sharp upward trend and climbed over 85% in 2006. Men over 70 rose from 27% in 1975/76 to 78% in 2006. Men ranging from 17-20 remain at its lowest at about 27% and 28% respectively in both years.

The proportion for women from age 30 to 49 rose sharply from 1975/76 from nearly 39%-43% to 79%-80%. Women from 70 and over showed a sharp increase in 1975/76 from 3% to 35% in 2006.17-20 aged group women increase moderately from 20% to 35% in upcoming year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data well, including the overall trend of increasing license ownership and the narrowing gender gap. You successfully identified key age groups and made relevant comparisons between the two years. However, the report is slightly unbalanced; while you provide detailed figures for men, the data for women is presented in a more compressed manner. Additionally, there are some minor inaccuracies in data reporting, such as the claim that men aged 30-49 remained 'static' when the graph shows a slight increase. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are described with precision and that the comparison between the two years is consistently balanced across all age categories.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on men and women respectively. The progression of ideas is generally clear. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, and there are instances where transitions between sentences could be smoother. For example, the start of the final paragraph feels abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences could benefit from more varied linking words to connect the data points more fluidly rather than listing them sequentially.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dramatic increase,' 'narrowing the gender gap,' and 'upward trend' effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in upcoming year' (which is inaccurate for a past data set) and '17-20 aged group women' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'men ranging in age from 30-49 remained almost static in figures' (missing preposition) and '17-20 aged group women increase' (tense inconsistency). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors, such as missing spaces after periods. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing historical data, as well as refining the use of prepositions to improve sentence flow.
