Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The Bar graph illustrates the ratio of individuals having driving license in Great Britain according to their age and gender.

Overall, it can be seen that in modern time womens in every age are driving more cars than before, although there is not much change for mens but the older ones are driving more in contrast of ancient time.

Firstly, Mens in its teen age has almost the same ratio in 1975/76 and 2006 with having 38 and 39 percentage respectively, although the age group of 21-29 has less driving licence in 2006 by around 7%, for the age group of 30-39 the ratio is constant with the value of 85 percent. while for the goups of 40-49 and 50-59 the trend got increased by 5 and 15 percent respectively, as Mens are getting older the ratio of driving license is also increasing for 60-69 age group it increased by almost 40% and for 70 and over age people it is doubled in 2006 than 1975/76.

for Womens, the trend is keep increased in 2006 than 1975/76, for all age group it increased almost double then 1975/76.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response provides a clear overview of the main trends, noting the general increase in driving licence holders, particularly among women. However, the report lacks precision in data selection. For instance, the description of the male age groups is overly repetitive and lists individual percentages rather than synthesising the information into meaningful comparisons. The mention of 'ancient time' is inappropriate for a formal report, as the data refers to 1975/76. To reach a higher band, focus on grouping data points to highlight significant differences or similarities rather than listing every figure, and ensure the tone remains objective and academic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally misused, such as 'for the age group of 30-39 the ratio is constant with the value of 85 percent. while for the goups...'. The transition between sentences is often abrupt. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the logical progression within paragraphs is hindered by the repetitive listing of data. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the flow of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'ratio' instead of 'percentage' or 'proportion', and 'modern time' or 'ancient time' which are not suitable for describing historical data. Spelling errors like 'womens', 'mens', and 'goups' occur frequently. To improve, you should focus on using more precise terminology related to data description (e.g., 'proportion', 'fluctuated', 'remained stable') and ensure consistent attention to spelling and pluralisation rules.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often marred by grammatical errors, such as 'the trend is keep increased' and 'as Mens are getting older the ratio... is also increasing'. Punctuation is inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and missing commas. Subject-verb agreement is frequently incorrect (e.g., 'Mens in its teen age'). To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and subject-verb agreement before attempting more complex structures. Proofreading for common errors like pluralisation and verb tense consistency is essential.
