Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The bar chart compares the percentages of men and women in different age groups who held a full car driving licence in Great Britain in 1975/76 and 2006.Overall, the proportion of people holding a full driving licence increased considerably between the two years for both sexes. Men generally had higher percentages than women, although the difference became smaller in 2006.Looking first at men, in 2006 the figures were particularly high among those aged 30–59, with approximately 90% holding a driving licence. The proportion was also high among 60–69-year-olds, at around 90%, while it was somewhat lower among those aged 70 and over. By contrast, only about one-third of men aged 17–20 had a licence. In 1975/76, the figures were generally lower, especially among the youngest and oldest groups.A similar pattern can be seen among women, although the percentages were lower than those for men in 1975/76. In 2006, around 80% of women aged 30–49 held a licence, while the figure for 21–29-year-olds was approximately two-thirds. Among women aged 17–20, the percentage was about one-third. The most noticeable increase occurred among older women, particularly those aged 50 and above.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses the task by identifying the main trends and making relevant comparisons between the two years and the two sexes. You have successfully highlighted the overall increase in licence holders and noted the narrowing gender gap. The key features, such as the high percentages in the 30–59 age range and the lower figures for the youngest and oldest groups, are clearly presented. The data is used accurately to support your points, and the overview is well-integrated. To reach a higher band, ensure that all significant data points are fully supported; for instance, you could have explicitly contrasted the 1975/76 figures for women more directly against the 2006 data to further strengthen the analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a well-defined overview, and separate paragraphs for men and women. The progression of ideas is smooth, and cohesive devices such as 'By contrast', 'A similar pattern', and 'while' are used effectively to link information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to manage the different aspects of the data. The flow between sentences is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive linking. The structure allows the reader to follow the comparison easily without any confusion regarding the data being discussed.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report, using terms like 'proportion', 'considerably', 'figures', and 'noticeable increase' with precision. The language is natural and fits the context of describing statistical data. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, it stays within a relatively standard range. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms for 'high' and 'low' to avoid repetition and add more nuance to your descriptions of the trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response exhibits a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of subordinate clauses ('although the difference became smaller', 'while it was somewhat lower') and participial phrases. The grammar is generally accurate, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. Punctuation is handled well, contributing to the clarity of the text. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over sentence structure is consistent throughout the response, reflecting a solid command of English grammar suitable for this task.
