Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar charts compare the percentage of men and women in Great Britain who held a full driving licence in 1975/76 and 2006, across seven different age groups.
Overall, the proportion of people with a full driving licence increased considerably between 1975/76 and 2006 in almost every age group. Men generally had higher rates than women, although the gap become much smaller among younge and middle-aged people.
In 1975/76, approximately 70% of men aged 21-29 held a driving licence, compared with around 40% of women. The figures for men increased to about 75-80% among those aged 30-49, while the corresponding figures for women aged approximately 50-55%. Among people aged 50-59 and 60-69 male ownership was around 70% and 65% respectively.
Moving further, in 2006, licence ownership had risen substantially. Around 80% of men aged 30-49 and approximately 85% of women aged 30-49 had a full driving licence. The percentage for women aged 50-59 also increased to around 80%, almost matching that of men.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response effectively identifies the main trends and makes relevant comparisons between the two time periods and genders. You have successfully highlighted the overall increase in licence ownership and the narrowing gender gap. However, the report is slightly incomplete; while you mention several age groups, you omit specific data points for the 70+ category and some of the 1975/76 figures are described in a way that lacks precision (e.g., 'approximately 50-55%'). To reach a higher band, ensure all key features are clearly supported by the provided data without leaving significant gaps in the overview of the age spectrum.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by time period. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In 1975/76', and 'Moving further' are used to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are more varied; 'Moving further' is a slightly unnatural way to introduce a new paragraph in this context. Using more sophisticated linking phrases would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'considerably', 'proportion', and 'substantially' to describe trends. There are a few minor errors, such as 'younge' (spelling) and 'become' (tense error: 'became'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it lacks the precision and variety of less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band. Incorporating more specific collocations related to data reporting, such as 'a marked increase' or 'a significant disparity', would elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are several grammatical slips that detract from the overall accuracy. For instance, 'the gap become much smaller' should be 'the gap became much smaller', and 'among younge and middle-aged people' contains a spelling error. Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'the corresponding figures for women aged approximately 50-55%', which is missing a verb. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band.
