Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graphs show the percentage of people holding full driving licenses in Great Britain by age and sex. It compares the license holders of 1975/76 with 2006 .

Overall, the number of women is less than men. The graphs shows people of age 17 to more than 70 . It is clear that the number of the men is almost reaching 40 with an age of 17-20 in 2006 and was a slight less in 1975/76 .

Then it go on increasing with increase in age as the men of age 21-29 had a number of 70 in 2006 and a bit less than 80 in 1975/76, while the women hardly crossed 60 in 2006 and 40 in 1975/76. Moving above demonstrates the number of men with age 30-39 and 40-49 have less number of license than the men of age 50-59 in 2006 but was less in 1975/76 for the men of same age. The number decreases onwards for the men.

Examination of the number of the women tells us us that it is maximum for the women of the age 40-49 in 2006 but was maximum for the age 30-39 in 1975/76. It was minimum for women of age 70 and over in 1975/76 and is almost equal for them in 2006 with the women of age 17-20.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data, such as the gender gap and age-related trends. However, the analysis is often confusing and lacks precision. For example, stating that the number of men is 'almost reaching 40' is unclear, as the y-axis represents a percentage, not a raw count. The comparison between 1975/76 and 2006 is attempted, but the description of the trends is often disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the data points accurately. To improve, you should focus on grouping data logically (e.g., by age cohorts) and ensuring that the comparisons are clearly linked to the specific years provided in the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the progression of ideas within them is often mechanical and sometimes confusing. The use of cohesive devices is limited; for instance, phrases like 'Then it go on increasing' and 'Moving above demonstrates' are awkward and do not effectively link the information. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as when you refer to 'the number of men' without specifying which year or age group you are comparing. Improving the use of transition signals and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one would significantly enhance the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision required for a higher band. You rely heavily on basic terms like 'number' and 'increase,' which are not always accurate when describing percentages. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'hardly crossed 60' and 'the number decreases onwards.' To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise terminology for describing trends, such as 'proportion,' 'peak,' 'fluctuate,' or 'decline,' and ensure that your word choices are appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('The graphs shows', 'it go on increasing') and awkward phrasing ('it is maximum for the women'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction is often clunky. To improve, focus on mastering basic subject-verb agreement and refining your use of comparative structures. Reducing these frequent errors will help your writing appear more controlled and professional.
