Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to summarise the data but fails to provide a clear, accurate overview. The information presented is often confusing or factually inconsistent with the provided graphs (e.g., mentioning a 'sharp increase in 2006' which is not clearly supported by the data). The report lacks a logical selection of key features; instead, it provides fragmented observations that do not effectively compare the trends between age groups and sexes. The analysis is under-developed, and the lack of clarity regarding the specific data points makes it difficult for the reader to follow the trends. To improve, focus on identifying the most significant peaks and troughs and describing them with precise data references.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into sections, but the internal structure is weak. The use of cohesive devices is limited and often mechanical or misused, such as 'on other hand' and 'moreover', which do not always connect ideas logically. The progression of information is disjointed, particularly within the body paragraphs where sentences seem to jump between age groups and years without a clear focus. Paragraphing is present but does not effectively group related information, leading to a lack of overall flow. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'thoroughly energetic' to describe a demographic group and 'balanced their number ideally', which are not appropriate for an academic report. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to convey the data with precision. To reach a higher band, you should use more precise terminology related to data description, such as 'proportion', 'fluctuation', 'peak', and 'decline', and avoid informal or imprecise descriptors that do not accurately reflect the statistical information provided in the graphs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'men were highly a participating'), sentence fragments, and incorrect punctuation. The range of structures is limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences with some errors in basic syntax. Complex structures are attempted but are often faulty, such as 'the figure of both genders were mainly engaging'. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tenses, and reducing errors in articles and prepositions. Proofreading for basic punctuation and capitalization is also essential.
