IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the percentage of people holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given bar graphs compare the percentage of car-driving license holders in Great Britain differentiated by age & sex for the years 1975/76 and 2006. It is evident from the diagrams that a higher percentage of men held a license compared to woman throughout this time period. In addition, an upward trend in license ownership for all age groups for both genders can be seen.
To begin with, in the year 1975/76 the proportion of men who owned a driving license was highest for the 30-39 age group with an approximately recorded value of 85%. On the other hand, the proportion of women in the same time period and of the same age group
who owned a license was roughly 50%. However, by 2006 the proportion of men owning a license remained stable. While, the proportion of women owning a license climbed to 78%.
Moving on, a similar pattern can be seen amongst young
Moreover, a similar trend can be seen among young drivers of the 17-20 age group in the year 2006. This suggests that younger individuals are more likely to get a driving license and its it also highlights a shift towards earlier driving adoption in the recent time period.
Moving on, the 70 and above age group experienced a prominent increase with approximately an average of 35% men and less than 10% women in 1975/76. However, this proportion increased to approximately 75% men and 30% women in 2006.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main features of the data well, identifying the gender gap and the overall upward trend across age groups. You successfully highlight key data points, such as the 30-39 age group in 1975/76 and the significant growth in the 70+ category. However, the analysis of the 17-20 age group is slightly confusing due to the fragmented sentence structure and the repetition of 'Moving on'. While you have selected relevant data, the comparison between the two years could be more integrated to better highlight the shift in trends. Overall, you have addressed the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. However, there are issues with cohesion. The repetition of 'Moving on' as a transition is mechanical and repetitive. Furthermore, the text contains a fragmented sentence ('...of the same age group who owned a license was roughly 50%') and a redundant paragraph break ('Moving on, a similar pattern can be seen amongst young / Moreover, a similar trend...'). These errors disrupt the flow of the argument. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that paragraphs are unified and free from unnecessary breaks.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proportion', 'differentiated', and 'upward trend' correctly. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'car-driving license' (usually 'full driving licence') and 'earlier driving adoption'. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band. To reach a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to data description, such as 'a significant surge' or 'remained relatively constant'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues. For example, 'its it also highlights' contains a typo, and the sentence structure in the second paragraph is broken by an unnecessary line break. There are also minor errors in article usage and prepositional phrases. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading to eliminate typos and ensure that complex sentences are punctuated correctly.
