Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The bar charts compare the percentages of men and women in Great Britain who held full car driving licenses in 1975/76 and 2006, across different age groups.

Overall, the proportion of license holders increased considerably between the two years for both sexes, particularly among women. In 2006, men generally had higher rates of license ownership than women, although the gap was much smaller among younger adults.

Among men, around **80%** of those aged 21–29 held a full permit in 1975/76, compared with approximately **90%** in 2006. The figures for the 30–39 and 40–49 age groups were also high, rising from about **85% and 80%** respectively to around **90%**. For men aged 50–59, the percentage increased from roughly **70% to 90%**. The largest growth occurred among older men, with the figure for those aged 70 and over rising from about **40% to 75%**.

Women showed a more dramatic increase. In 1975/76, only around **10–40%** of women across the age groups held licenses. By 2006, this had risen to approximately **35–80%**, with women aged 30–49 recording the highest levels.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response effectively identifies the main trends and makes relevant comparisons between the two years and the two sexes. You have successfully highlighted the overall increase in license holders and the narrowing gender gap. The data is well-selected, and the key features are clearly presented. However, the description of the women's data in the final paragraph is slightly vague; using ranges like '10–40%' and '35–80%' is less precise than citing specific data points for key age groups, which would have strengthened the analysis. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by gender. This structure allows for easy navigation of the data. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'In 2006,' 'compared with,' and 'the largest growth occurred' are used effectively to link ideas and guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text. The flow is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive phrasing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a data-driven task. Phrases such as 'proportion of license holders,' 'considerably,' 'dramatic increase,' and 'recording the highest levels' are used accurately. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey precise meaning without repetition. While the range is solid, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations related to trends (e.g., 'a marginal increase' or 'a plateau') could elevate the score further. Nevertheless, the lexical control is consistent, and there are no errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You have used comparative structures effectively, such as 'compared with approximately 90% in 2006' and 'although the gap was much smaller.' Grammar is generally accurate, with correct use of tense and subject-verb agreement. Punctuation is handled well, and the sentences are clear and easy to follow. There are no significant grammatical errors, and the control over complex structures is consistent, which is typical of a high-level performance.
