Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to summarise the data, but it falls short in several areas regarding Task Achievement. The overview paragraph is confusing and inaccurate, stating that men aged 50-59 and women aged 40-49 'holds a full driving license in 2006' rather than identifying broader trends such as the general increase in licence holding among women and older demographics over time. Furthermore, many of the specific data points cited in the body paragraphs are inaccurate or misread from the chart (for instance, stating that women aged 17-20, 50-59, and 60-69 were at the same numbers, or providing confusing ranges). While the response touches upon the visual data, it lacks a well-developed, accurate selection of main features and meaningful comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organised into four paragraphs, following a standard introductory and body paragraph structure. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing statements and poor referencing. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'Whilst' and 'Whereas' without establishing a clear contrastive relationship between clauses. Additionally, paragraphing is underdeveloped; the final body paragraph for the year 2006 is extremely brief and fails to adequately develop the data presented for that year, leading to an overall disjointed structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is quite repetitive and basic, relying heavily on phrases like 'full driving license access' and 'holds most of driving license access,' which are unnatural collocations. There is a lack of flexibility and range in vocabulary, and the student struggles with word choice and word formation. While the topic-specific vocabulary ('driving license', 'percentage', 'men', 'women') is present, the frequent awkward phrasing and misuse of terms limit the precision of the response and occasionally strain the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, primarily relying on simple sentences and basic compound structures. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'men of age 50-59 and women of age 40-49 holds', 'men of age 21-59 holds') and tense usage. Errors in prepositions and article usage are also common. Although some complex sentence structures are attempted, they are frequently faulty and cause distraction or occasional difficulty for the reader.
