The bar chart compares the percentages of full car driving licence holders among men and women in Great Britain in 1975/76 and 2006, across seven different age groups.

Overall, the percentage of people holding a driving licence increased considerably between 1975/76 and 2006 for both sexes. Men had higher rates than women in most age groups, although the difference became much smaller among younger people.

In 1975/76, around 75% of men aged 50–59 held a driving licence, while the figure for women in the same age group was only about 25%. Similarly, approximately 80% of men aged 40–49 had licences, compared with about 35% of women. Among those aged 30–39, the figures were roughly 85% for men and 50% for women.

By 2006, male licence ownership had risen to around 90% among people aged 40–59 and approximately 87% among those aged 30–39. The most noticeable increases for women occurred among the middle-aged groups, reaching about 80% for women aged 40–49 and 75% for those aged 50–59.

Among the oldest group, men remained well ahead, at about 75%, compared with approximately 30% of women.
