The graphs below show the percentage of people holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The provided bar charts compare the percentage of people holding full car driving licences in Great Britain according to age and sex in 1975/76 and 2006. Evidently, female licence ownership increased considerably over the period.

Initially, in 1975/76, men generally had higher figures than women. Among 17–20-year-olds, around 40% of men held a licence, compared with only 20% of women. Subsequently, the figure for men rose to approximately 70% among 21–29-year-olds and peaked at about 90% for those aged 50–59. By contrast, the proportion of women gradually increased to around 50% among 21–29-year-olds, before declining among older groups.

By 2006, female ownership had risen substantially, reaching about 80% among 30–49-year-olds. Meanwhile, the figure for men remained high, at roughly 80–90% in most middle-aged groups. Among people aged 70 and over, both sexes recorded lower figures.
