Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features from the charts. An overall trend is provided, comparing male and female licence holders, and specific data points for various age groups across both years (1975/76 and 2006) are highlighted and compared. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies in quoting the precise figures, such as stating '50 to 49' instead of '50 to 59', and some data points are generalised rather than precisely contrasted. Nonetheless, the core information required for an academic summary is effectively captured, meeting the requirements of a Band 6.5 or solid Band 6 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is organized into clear paragraphs, starting with an introduction, moving to an overview, and then presenting body paragraphs detailing specific data. Logical organization is present throughout, although progression between ideas can sometimes feel a bit abrupt. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'However', 'In 1975/76', and 'By 2006' are employed to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately, though referencing and transitional links between sentences could be smoother. This corresponds well to a Band 6 level of coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'delineate', 'proportion', 'genders', and 'significant progress'. However, there are noticeable spelling and lexical errors, such as 'propotion' instead of 'proportion', and minor awkwardness in word forms or phrasing like 'men came upto 76%'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success. These vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including comparative structures and temporal clauses. There are instances of good grammatical control, but also several errors in grammar, prepositions, and numbers, such as 'men at the age 21 to 29 and 50 to 49' (typographical confusion of age brackets) and missing articles ('holding full driving licence'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur with enough frequency to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band score.
