Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising the main features of the graphs showing driving licence holders in Great Britain by age and sex. However, the overview is extremely weak, containing grammatical confusions ('Overall, the proportion of women have full driving licences increase in 2006 while men increase in 2006 except age between 21-29'). Furthermore, the body paragraphs contain numerous inaccuracies in reading the data from the visual. For instance, the student states that 17-20 year old women in 2006 were at 'about 35%', whereas the chart indicates 33%, and claims that '83% mens and 79% womens' held licences for ages 30-39 when the actual figures are around 87% and 78% respectively. Key trends, such as the dramatic overall rise in female licence holders across most age groups between 1975/76 and 2006, are only partially and clumsily communicated. This performance aligns best with Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is divided into three paragraphs, providing some structural organisation, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as starting sentences abruptly with 'Aged 21-29 lower percentage...' and 'In mens this number were lower...'. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping related information fails due to disjointed sentence structures and erratic jumping between years and demographics. Referencing and substitution are frequently faulty, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical relationship between data points. This level of organisation and cohesion sits comfortably at Band 5.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'percentage', 'people', 'number', 'men', and 'women'. There are several word formation and collocation errors, such as 'womens licences lower respectively' and 'least percentage of womens held'. Spelling and morphological inaccuracies are noticeable throughout the text (e.g. 'sligthly', 'bot', 'mens', 'womens'). While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic of the graphs, the recurring lexical errors and lack of flexibility prevent the response from achieving a higher band. This is a clear Band 5 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and prepositions throughout the essay, such as 'the proportion of women have... increase', 'were least percentage', and 'in mens this number were lower'. Punctuation and sentence structures are frequently faulty, causing strain for the reader. Although meaning can generally be inferred with effort, the high frequency of grammatical mistakes keeps the score at Band 5.
