Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of driving licence holding rates by age and sex in Great Britain for 1975/76 and 2006. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting that men held more licences overall and that there was a significant rise among women in 2006. Key data points are selected and compared, such as the high percentages among men aged 21 to 60 and the substantial growth for older women. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reading specific figures from the chart—for example, the text states 'below than 60% of men of age 60 or more had driving licences in 1975/76' when the 60-69 bracket was exactly 60%. Despite these minor data inaccuracies, the overall trends and comparisons are adequately reported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is arranged coherently with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs discussing specific age groups. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the data. However, the progression is sometimes hindered by clunky transitions and mechanical cohesive devices, such as 'meanwhile', 'whereas', and 'however'. Referencing is occasionally imprecise, for instance with 'while their was a significant rise' containing a spelling error ('their' instead of 'there') and awkward phrasing. Overall, the essay maintains a logical flow, but the mechanical nature of the cohesion prevents it from reaching a higher band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'considerably', and 'grow sharply'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling errors that affect precision, such as 'holded' instead of 'held', 'their was' instead of 'there was', 'driving permit' instead of 'driving licence', and 'as compare' instead of 'as compared'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are somewhat marred by these recurring inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, though meaning is still generally clear to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses introduced by 'while', 'meanwhile', and 'whereas'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors throughout the text, such as 'men of all ages holded more', 'only about 50% women who had', 'less then 43%' (using 'then' instead of 'than'), and 'Below than 60%'. Punctuation is also flawed in places, such as missing commas and run-on phrasing. While these errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the attainment of a higher band score.
