Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising information from the bar chart regarding full car driving licences by age and sex in Great Britain. However, the selection and reporting of main features is disjointed and imprecise. For example, the overview sentence focuses on specific, minor details rather than broad trends, stating that 'the male have higher percentage... in the age group of 50 to 59'. The data points cited are sometimes confusing or inaccurate regarding the overall patterns, such as the general rise in licence holding for women between 1975 and 2006 across most age groups. The comparison between years and genders lacks a cohesive overview of the most prominent features, such as the narrowing gap between men and women or the significant increase among older age groups. Consequently, it achieves a band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text suffers from poor paragraphing and weak cohesive devices. The response is essentially broken into isolated, poorly connected sentences rather than a coherent structure with clear logical progression. Words like 'however' are used awkwardly, and the transitions between ideas fail to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison of the two time periods and demographics. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow which demographic or year is being discussed. There is no clear introduction, body, and conclusion structure; instead, sentences are clustered into a single block with arbitrary line breaks. This corresponds to a band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent lexical errors and awkward collocations. Examples include 'porportions of holding full driving licences', 'women's got higher porportion', and 'was trending related to this regard'. Spelling errors such as 'porportions' and grammatical misuses of words like 'trending' indicate a limited range that is barely adequate for the task. Less common vocabulary is attempted with a lack of awareness of style and collocation, leading to unnatural phrases like 'numerous porportion as over 25 % to above 80%'. These noticeable errors sometimes cause difficulty for the reader, placing the lexical performance firmly at band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple or awkwardly constructed complex sentences that are frequently faulty. There are multiple grammatical errors throughout the response, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the male have', 'women's got'), missing articles ('in united kingdom', 'in year 1975/76'), and incorrect prepositions ('at the age group'). Punctuation and capitalization are also erratic, with lowercase letters starting sentences ('overall', 'however') and random double spacing. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, matching the descriptors for band 5.0.
