Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the data and presents a clear overview. The candidate identifies general trends, such as the increase in licence holders across most age groups between 1975-76 and 2006, and highlights peak groups accurately (e.g., noting that men aged 50-59 accounted for the largest proportion in 2006). However, there are some minor inaccuracies and generalisations in the reporting of specific figures, such as stating that almost 90% of men aged 50-59 had a licence when the chart shows roughly 92%, and some confusion over the female peak age groups. Nevertheless, all parts of the prompt are addressed, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is structured into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific data points. There is a clear overall progression. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, transitional phrases like 'To begin with' and 'Moreover' are used, but referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., 'In former years' used repeatedly without precise temporal grounding, and minor mechanical linking errors). Paragraphing is present and appropriate, but internal cohesion lacks seamlessness. This performance aligns well with the Band 6 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'proportion', 'accounted for', and 'percentage'. However, there are numerous spelling errors ('perecentage', 'permenannet', 'differed', 'gendrs', 'friving', 'fugure', 'iin') and word choice inaccuracies (e.g., 'license holders are differed on age and gender basis', 'ladies'). These errors occasionally detract from the reading experience, though communication is not impeded. This range and level of accuracy fit the Band 5.5 to 6.0 profile, safely sitting at Band 5.5 due to the high density of spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The candidate attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses and comparative structures ('as compared to 1975-1976, except in males with age 20-29'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in age group'), incorrect prepositions ('with age', 'in men section'), punctuation errors (missing capitalization and full stops), and subject-verb agreement slips ('perecentage... had increased'). While the meaning can generally be understood, errors are frequent enough to prevent the writing from achieving a Band 6.0, making Band 5.5 the most appropriate score.
