Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the graphs concerning car driving licence holders in Great Britain by age and sex in two specific periods. However, there are notable errors and inaccuracies in reading the data, such as claiming there were three different years when the chart shows only 1975/76 and 2006, and citing typos like '755' instead of 75%. The overview identifies that percentages increased in 2006 for almost all groups, which is a valid general trend. Ideas are presented, but data interpretation is frequently loose or inaccurate. This places the response firmly at Band 5.0 for partially addressing the task with under-developed and sometimes inaccurate details.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, starting with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific age groups. However, the logical progression is hindered by poor transitions, awkward linking phrases like 'To begin with' and 'Furthermore', and punctuation issues. Cohesive devices are at times used mechanically or inaccurately. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal flow of ideas within paragraphs feels disjointed due to abrupt shifts between male and female data points. Overall, the arrangement provides some structure, but cohesion is faulty and referencing is not always clear, meeting the criteria for Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary suitable for Academic Task 1. There are several spelling mistakes ('lisences', 'climp', 'adittion', 'showd', 'Simillarly') and word form errors ('female portion', 'male side'). While the student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'proportion', 'substantial growth', and 'soared', the frequent lexical and spelling errors impede clear communication in places. The vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task but lacks precision and control, corresponding to a Band 5.0 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement ('people with age 70 and over... have', 'male aged 50 to 59 have'), tense consistency, and prepositions ('in male side', 'with both the sides'). Punctuation is also problematic, with missing capital letters after full stops and stray periods used incorrectly. Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, the response achieves a Band 5.0 for grammar.
