Student answer (Band 5.0)

The graphs below illustrate percentage of people who have full driving licences in UK according to age and gender.

Overall, it can be seen that women of all age having less percentage as compared to men. Furthermore, people having lower age contain few driving licences.

Men whose age range from 17-20 have fewer proportion that is almost 38% in 1975 as well as 2006. This is also the same for women as their numbers are 20% in 1975 and 32% in 2006. However, individuals belonging to both gender of age 21-59 have equivalent amount of licenses in 2006 and the range is between 60 to 90%. in 1975, this was not the case. men have greater volume as comapred to women in this time period.

In addition, there were less than 20% women(60plus) in 1975 who hold a driving permit. while the men of this age group have have better stats. In 2006, men got the maximum percentage up to 90% while women have 62 and 30%. Therefore, women with age above 70 have just 3% of car licence in 1975.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student attempts to address the task by summarising the main features of the graphs. An overview is provided, stating that women had a lower percentage of driving licences overall and younger people had fewer licences. However, the overview is rather simplistic and contains minor inaccuracies regarding the age groupings. Key features are reported, such as the proportions for 17-20 year olds and the dramatic rise in licence holding among older women by 2006. Some comparisons are made across sex and year, but the selection of data lacks sharpness. Specific figures are mentioned, like '38%' for men and '20%' in 1975, which generally align with the visual data. Overall, the response covers the main trends but would benefit from a more precise and comprehensive overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is arranged into four paragraphs, beginning with an introductory sentence and an overall summary. Logical progression is attempted, but transitions between ideas can be abrupt. Cohesive devices are used, but sometimes inaccurately or mechanically, such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'In addition'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in 'this was not the case' or 'men have greater volume'. Paragraphing is present, but the logical flow within paragraphs is interrupted by isolated sentences, such as the final sentence about women over 70. Overall, the organisation shows a basic structure, but cohesion requires more sophisticated control.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe percentages, age groups, and trends. However, there are notable limitations and word-choice errors, such as 'people having lower age contain few driving licences', 'equivalent amount of licenses', and 'greater volume'. Some less common vocabulary is attempted ('proportion', 'individuals', 'percentage'), but collocation and phrasing are frequently awkward. Spelling and word-formation errors are also present, such as 'comapred'. The vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic message, but frequent inaccuracies restrict the band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'Overall, it can be seen that women of all age having less percentage as compared to men.' However, grammatical control is weak, with frequent errors in verb forms ('women of all age having', 'men have greater volume'), articles, and prepositions. Punctuation errors also occur, such as a missing capital letter in 'in 1975, this was not the case. men have greater volume'. Complex structures are often faulty or awkward, and errors occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader, though communication is generally maintained. The frequency of structural and grammatical inaccuracies places this response firmly at Band 5.0.
