Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. First, it fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, stopping abruptly at just 79 words. Furthermore, the report is incomplete and cuts off mid-sentence. While the student attempts to provide an overview and mentions some general trends—such as noting that men generally held higher percentages than women—the data points cited contain inaccuracies and confusion regarding the figures from the visual data. For instance, the reference to '30-39 around 82 mens' misinterprets the chart's axes and scales. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the response is fully completed, meets the word count, and accurately selects and reports the main features and comparisons from the charts without trailing off.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some basic attempts at organisation, beginning with an introductory sentence and attempting an overall summary paragraph. However, because the text is very short and cuts off mid-sentence, there is no clear overall progression or complete body of analysis. Cohesive devices are minimal, relying on simple connectors like 'whereas', but referencing is sometimes unclear, and the text lacks the paragraph structure needed for a complete report. To improve, the writer needs to structure the response into logically sequenced paragraphs that fully develop comparisons and trends using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, featuring basic items and repetitive phrasing like 'percentage', 'lowest number', and 'holders'. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as spelling 'Great Britain' with lowercase letters, misspelling 'licences' as 'lisences', and awkward word choices like 'how many number of individuals'. These errors stem from basic spelling and word formation issues that occasionally strain the reader's understanding. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical range to include more precise, less common vocabulary relating to data reporting (such as 'proportion', 'demographic', or 'trend') and pay closer attention to spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple or attempted complex clauses that contain frequent errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues such as 'the licence holders of men has highest percentage and women has' and prepositional or structural errors like 'by age and sex'. Because the text is incomplete, the grammatical variety remains restricted, and frequent errors in articles, plurals, and verb forms cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to practice forming accurate complex sentences with correct subject-verb agreement, proper article usage, and consistent control over basic grammatical structures.
