Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing the graphs showing licence holders by age and sex in Great Britain, meeting the minimum word count once prompt-copied words are excluded. However, the task achievement is limited because the information presented is largely inaccurate, confusing, and fails to provide a clear overview or select and report the main features properly. For instance, the writer claims that men are highest in the 17 to 20 age group at 38% (when younger age groups actually show much higher figures in other brackets) and makes disjointed statements such as "women are additionally decreased that the age of 70 in 1975." Key trends, such as the overall increase in female licence holders over time across multiple age groups, are missed or poorly articulated. To move up, the response must accurately report data directly from the visual source and highlight clear trends rather than fragmented, inaccurate figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The organisation of the essay suffers from significant weaknesses in logical progression and paragraphing. Although the student attempts to use transition markers like "On the one hand" and "On the other hand," these are used incorrectly and do not appropriately contrast the two parts of the data. Sentences often lack logical connection, making the overall arrangement difficult to follow. For example, paragraphs group unrelated points together without a clear overarching theme. Referencing is frequently unclear, and cohesive devices are inadequate or misused, resulting in disjointed delivery. To improve coherence, the student needs to group related data logically—such as comparing overall trends by sex or contrasting the two survey years—and ensure that each paragraph has a clear central topic with smooth transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and collocation that occasionally strain comprehension. Examples of awkward phrasing include "It can be clear observed," "men are increased alot," and "women holders are rare." There is an attempt to use descriptive terms like "heighest percentage" and "highly improved," but these are marred by spelling errors ("heighest" instead of highest) and inappropriate collocations. To reach a higher band, the student should expand their range of vocabulary to include more precise terms for describing statistical changes, such as verbs like "rose," "declined," or "surged," and adverbs like "significantly" or "gradually," while paying closer attention to standard collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence patterns, while attempts at more complex structures frequently result in severe errors. There are frequent mistakes in verb tenses, passive/active voice, and prepositions within grammatical patterns, such as "men are increased alot in the age of 50" and "that the age of 70." Punctuation and article usage are also unreliable, with misplaced periods and missing articles affecting readability. To improve this criterion, the student must work on basic sentence construction, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, accurately apply tense forms when describing past and present data, and reduce the frequency of structural errors that impede understanding.
