Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially by reporting some key features and making general comparisons, such as noting that male holders were higher across all age categories. However, the selection of data is sometimes disjointed and lacks clear focus on overall trends. For example, some figures are misread or confused, such as stating that '30-39 group male recorded the highest number... which was more than 80%' when other age groups like the 50-59 and 60-69 brackets reached over 90% in 2006. Additionally, the overview is somewhat basic, and the data is presented as a list of disconnected details rather than a cohesive summary, showing limited development of main trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response attempts a structured approach by dividing the body paragraphs into an overview, male data, and female data, which provides a basic framework. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow between sentences within paragraphs is frequently disrupted. Cohesive devices are sometimes used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'Regarding 1975/76' and 'Turning to the females', and referencing is occasionally unclear. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is mechanical, resulting in a disjointed reading experience where relationships between ideas and data points are not always smoothly managed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'proportion', 'constituted', and 'comprised'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, including spelling mistakes like 'holiders' and 'consitituted', as well as awkward word choices and phrasing, such as '17-20 year boys represented the least amount' instead of percentage. These errors and occasional inaccuracies in collocation cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher level of lexical precision and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, with mostly simple sentences and frequent faults when attempting complex ones. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including prepositions and awkward phrase structures such as 'among to the women', subject-verb agreement issues like 'holder was', and tense or year confusions such as '2007' instead of 2006. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, though the general meaning of the comparisons can usually be deciphered.
