IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graphs below show the percentage of people holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Full car driving license holders by sex and age are clearly depicted in the graphs provided.
The percentage of men having a license in 1975/76 was more than women by the age of 17-20. It shows how much the society was different back then clearly favouring men. In comparison, the 2006 data depicts that women's license holders percentage grew by a faster rate than men's.
By the age of 21-29, 1975/76 men used to drive more it seems by the graph since the percentage of men having a drivers license has shrunk by a few points in 2006, maybe due to the modern innovation in public transport while women's license holders rose byabout 20 percent showing women empowerment.
The older age graph shows that as men and women age, their need for a license increases as they lose ability to travel a lot using public transport or even walk by foot.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing aspects of the bar chart, but it falls short in properly selecting and reporting the main features. Instead of providing an objective summary of the data, the student includes personal speculation and commentary, such as suggesting that changes were 'due to the modern innovation in public transport' or citing 'women empowerment'. Furthermore, key data points are either omitted or inaccurately described. For instance, the statement that men's licence holding for the 21-29 age group 'shrank by a few points' misses the significant comparison between genders and eras, and the interpretation of the older age graph contradicts the actual trends shown in the visual data. The overview is absent, and the overall treatment of the task remains partial and unfocused.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some organisation by separating ideas into distinct paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression or logical structure guiding the reader through the data. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or awkward in their referencing, such as using 'It shows how much the society was different back then clearly favouring men' without a clear antecedent or logical link to the previous sentence. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks a cohesive plan, mixing comparisons across age groups and years without a systematic approach. To improve, the student needs to establish clear logical links between sentences and structure the response with a distinct overview and well-ordered body paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for a basic attempt at the task, including phrases like 'percentage of men having a licence' and 'older age graph'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices that detract from the writing, such as 'walk by foot' instead of 'on foot', and 'rose byabout' (spacing error). The use of less common vocabulary is limited, and expressions tend to be informal or imprecise for an academic report, such as 'more it seems by the graph'. Spelling and word formation are generally controlled, but the vocabulary remains somewhat repetitive and lacks the precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The percentage of men having a license in 1975/76 was more than women by the age of 17-20.' However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with prepositions and modifiers, such as 'percentage of men having a drivers license has shrunk by a few points' and 'rose byabout 20 percent showing women empowerment.' Article usage and phrasing within grammatical patterns also show occasional awkwardness. While communication is not entirely impeded, the frequency of grammatical slips and awkward clause structures prevents the writing from achieving a higher level of control.
