Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The graphs show the trends in distribution of full car driving license holders by sex and age in Great Britain in the year 1975/76 and 2006.

Overall, in all age groups and both years, the percentage of men holding driving license was more than the women. Also, the number of women driving license holders increased from 1975/76 to 2006 in all age groups. Similarly, the number of men driving license holders also increased in all age groups except 21-29.

The number of women driving license holders witnessed substantial increase in all age groups. Women aged 30-39 had the highest percent of about 50 among all age groups in 1975/76, which increased to just below 80 percent in 2006. Just below 40 percent of women aged 40-49 had the driving license in year 1975/76, which increased substantially to almost 80 % to make it the highest among all age groups in 2006.

Similar to the trend in women, men aged 30-39 had the highest percent of over 80 in 1975/76. But unlike the trend in the distribution among women, almost 90 percent of men owned full car driving license to make it the highest among all age groups in 2006. In 1975/76, Both men and women aged 70 and above were the least to own a driving license. Women aged 70 and above were still the least in 2006, while men aged 17-20 were the least to hold driving license in that year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features and making relevant comparisons across age groups and sexes for both years. A clear overview is provided at the beginning, noting that men consistently held higher percentage rates than women and that overall ownership increased over time, except for young men. Key data points are accurately reported, such as the peak ownership among those aged 30-39 in 1975/76 and the shifts observed by 2006. Ideas are generally well-extended and supported with figures, such as women aged 30-39 increasing from about 50 to just below 80 percent. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalize or rely on minor descriptive details rather than fully synthesizing broader trends for the next band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response exhibits clear logical organization and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, starting with an introductory overview paragraph, followed by a general summary paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs focusing on women and men respectively. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Similarly', 'In 1975/76', and 'Unlike the trend' are used effectively to guide the reader through the data. Paragraphing is used appropriately, ensuring each section has a distinct focus. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional mechanical transitions prevent the cohesion from being fully seamless or flexible, keeping the response firmly at this solid level.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

An adequate range of vocabulary is deployed for the task, allowing the writer to describe trends with reasonable precision using terms like 'distribution', 'substantial increase', and 'ownership'. There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'witnessed substantial increase' and 'least to own a driving license'. However, some word choice and collocation inaccuracies persist, such as writing 'highest percent of about 50' instead of 'peak percentage of around 50' and repeatedly using 'driving license' instead of 'driving licence holders' or mixing up percentage and number terms. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions effectively, such as 'which increased to just below 80 percent in 2006'. There are frequent error-free sentences, showing a good level of control over basic syntax. However, some minor grammatical errors persist, particularly missing articles ('holding driving license' instead of 'holding a driving licence') and minor preposition or pluralization slips (e.g., 'Both men and women aged 70 and above were the least to own'). These errors rarely impede communication, but they prevent the attainment of a higher band which requires a wider variety of fully error-free complex structures.
