Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to summarise the main features of the charts by discussing licensing percentages across different age groups and years for both sexes. However, the task is only partially addressed because the selection of data is somewhat haphazard and contains inaccuracies regarding the actual trends shown in the charts. For instance, the statement that men above 50 in 2006 had a range less than 80 percent contradicts the visual data, where licensing rates for men aged 50-69 actually exceeded 90 percent. Furthermore, the overview is unclear and lacks a well-developed summary of the overall patterns, presenting instead a collection of isolated and sometimes confusing details. To reach a higher band, the response would need to select key features more accurately, provide a clearer overall trend, and ensure that all cited data points correctly reflect the source material without internal contradictions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates some basic organization, separating the introduction, body details, and a concluding remark, but it lacks a clear overall progression throughout the text. The use of cohesive devices is frequently mechanical or inappropriate, such as beginning a body sentence with 'consequently,' which does not logically follow from the preceding sentence. Additionally, referencing and pronoun use can be confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of comparisons between genders and years. Paragraphing is also rudimentary, as sentences are clumped together without clear thematic grouping. To achieve a higher band, the writing must employ a more logical sequence of ideas, use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices without repetition or misuse, and structure paragraphs so that each focuses on a distinct, clearly connected aspect of the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include spelling and word form errors like 'numer' instead of number, 'licences' versus 'licence' used inconsistently, and unnatural phrasing such as 'engage in having driving licence' or 'mens percentage'. While the student attempts some topic-related vocabulary such as percentages, age groups, and gender categories, the lack of precision and control restricts the range. To improve, the writer needs to incorporate more precise lexical items for describing statistical trends, avoid basic spelling slips, and ensure correct word forms and collocations, such as 'the percentage of men' instead of 'mens percentage'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic patterns where attempts at more complex formulations are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including missing articles ('holding the driving licences accounted for Great Britain'), incorrect prepositions ('above the 50 age', 'by age of 17 to 20 years old'), and faulty subject-verb agreement or noun-modifier structures ('womens groups', 'mens had higher percentage'). These persistent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader in untangling the intended meaning. To move up to the next band, the student must demonstrate a better control of basic grammatical structures, use articles and prepositions more accurately, and produce error-free simple sentences alongside more reliable complex sentence forms.
