Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, standing at 145 words when excluding prompt-copied text, which restricts task coverage. The overview is weak and confused, reading like fragmented notes ('Overall, the bar grap demonstrates...'). While the student attempts to report some data points from the charts—such as mentioning 30-39 year olds in 1975/76 and 50-59 year olds in 2006—the information is presented as a disjointed list of figures rather than a well-synthesised summary. Key trends, such as the overall dramatic increase in female licence holders across most age groups, are missed or only partially addressed. To improve, the writer needs to provide a clearer, more accurate overview of main trends, ensure the word count exceeds the minimum threshold, and select key features for meaningful comparison rather than listing isolated data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some basic organisation by attempting to separate information into an introduction, body details for men, and body details for women. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical structure guiding the reader through the data. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or awkwardly, such as repetitive transitions like 'Likewise' and 'Furthermore', which fail to create natural links between sentences. Paragraphing is rudimentary and chaotic, particularly with the sudden introduction of fragmented overview statements. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure logical sequencing of information, employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices, and structure the response into distinct, unified paragraphs that guide the reader smoothly from the overview to detailed comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'percentage', 'people', 'holding', 'driving licences', 'highest', and 'lowest'. There are numerous spelling, word form, and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'grap' instead of 'graph', 'demonstrates' used incorrectly, 'man' instead of 'men', and spelling errors like 'allmost' and 'less that'. These lexical slips and limited range restrict the response to a lower band. To improve, the student should expand their vocabulary to include precise synonyms and academic phrasing, improve control over word forms (such as plurals and parts of speech), and carefully check spelling before finalising the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response exhibits a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty attempts at complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('30-39 year women hold'), missing articles ('in first bar graph', 'by 17-20'), incorrect prepositions ('in the age between 70'), and punctuation errors. Many sentences are structurally incomplete or tangled, such as 'Moreover, in the year 2006 50-59 age group men hold highest percentage of driving licence 95% and the lowest percentage by 17-20 with over 35% man hold driving licence.' To move up, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure accurate verb tenses for past and present data, use articles correctly, and reduce the frequency of errors that obscure meaning.
