Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response only partially addresses the task and is cut off mid-sentence, failing to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words (stopping at 144 words). While the student attempts to provide an overview and mention some features, the data cited is frequently inaccurate and confused. For example, stating that 'men stood at approximatley 40 in both years' or that 'in 30-39 both sex had same car licince holders' misrepresents the actual visual data from the charts. The position and comparisons between sexes and age groups are not clearly developed, leading to a minimal and fragmented response that sits firmly at this band level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some basic organisation, attempting an introductory sentence followed by body details, but there is no clear overall progression or logical sequencing of information. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, or inaccurate, such as 'At first glance', 'In addtion', and 'On further analysis', which are used awkwardly. Paragraphing is disjointed, and referencing between ideas is often unclear, leaving the reader struggling to follow the comparison between the age groups and years. To improve, the writer needs to group related data logically and use cohesive ties more naturally to guide the reader through the trends.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, such as 'illustrat' instead of illustrate, 'recored' instead of recorded, 'sex' instead of sexes, and 'licince' instead of licence. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but inaccurate word forms and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and impede clear communication. To reach a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range with accurate spelling and more precise reporting verbs and nouns relevant to statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or awkwardly constructed sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing prepositions, article errors ('the figure of 17-20, men'), and faulty relative or comparative clauses ('while womens represented by 10% than in 1975-76'). These errors occur throughout the text and frequently cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to focus on basic sentence construction, correct subject-verb agreement, and accurate use of modifiers when comparing numerical data.
