Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The graph compares the percentage of people holding driving licences in Great Britain by both age and sex (men and women) in 1975/76 and 2006.
Overall, the percentage of women holding the full car driving licence increased dramatically in 2006, in contrast to men whose percentage remains steady. Furthermore, the most percentage of licence holder among men and women are in their middle ages, least during teenage and above 70.
38 perecent of women is 1975 at the age of 40-49 held the licence, but in year 2006 almost 80% of women had their driving licences made showcasing the dramatic shift in the percentage. On the other hand 80% men in this age group had licence in 1975 and in 2006 number grew to 82% no significant shift happened. Similarly, approximately 1% women over age 70 had licence in 1975, on other hand almost 36% mens were licience holders.
In men almost same percentage was seen in 2006 and 1975 in age group of 30s but in women growth was about 25% in same age group. This showcase that number of licence holders have increased over the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially, attempting to present an overview and select key features from the visual data, though some details are inaccurate or under-developed. The introductory sentence successfully paraphrases the prompt, and an overview is provided noting the general trend of increased licence holding among women compared to stability among men, alongside age peaks. However, the supporting body data contains several inaccurate figures and misreadings compared to the actual chart, such as stating that '38 percent of women in 1975 at the age of 40-49 held the licence' when the chart shows approximately 37%, and claiming 'approximately 1% women over age 70 had licence in 1975' whereas the true figure is closer to 3%. Furthermore, some ideas lack clear extension, leading to a somewhat disjointed reporting of data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, moving from an introduction to an overview and subsequent body details. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'On the other hand', and 'Similarly', though referencing is occasionally mechanical or unclear (e.g., 'in this age group' and 'in same age group' without precise contextual links). While logical progression is maintained between sentences, the lack of precise transitional phrases within the body paragraphs prevents a smoother flow of information. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, but internal cohesion could be further refined.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating an attempt to discuss percentages, trends, and demographic comparisons using words such as 'percentage', 'dramatic', 'steady', and 'shift'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'most percentage of licence holder', 'had their driving licences made', and 'mens were licience holders'. Spelling errors also occur, including 'perecent' and 'licience'. These errors reflect an attempt to use less common vocabulary with limited precision, resulting in occasional strain for the reader while still communicating the general message.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a limited range of structures, featuring a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are several grammatical errors regarding subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, such as 'whose percentage remains steady' (inconsistent tense usage), 'in year 2006', and 'in men almost same percentage'. Punctuation is also sparse, leading to run-on structures like 'On the other hand 80% men in this age group had licence in 1975 and in 2006 number grew to 82% no significant shift happened.' These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader, though they do not entirely obscure the intended meaning.
