Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the chart’s subject and both years, and you attempt to compare age groups. However, the response is incomplete and does not provide a reliable overview of the main patterns. Several figures are substantially misreported: for men in 1975/76, the 30–39 group was about 77%, not 82%, and the 40–49 group was about 81%; by 2006 these were about 87% and 89%, not 83% and 85%. The women’s 1975/76 figures are also reversed or inaccurate: the 40–49 group was about 37% and the 30–39 group about 49%, rather than 80% and 79%. The final comparison is unfinished. The response is also 23 words below the required minimum. Select accurate key comparisons and complete the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure: an introduction, a brief overview, and separate paragraphs beginning with “Considering men” and “In case of women.” These divisions help the reader recognise the intended topics. However, there is little overall progression because the women’s paragraph stops mid-sentence at “Interestingly, the data for both,” leaving the comparison incomplete. Linking expressions such as “However” and “Whereas” are used, but the relationships between the figures are not always clear, and the long sentence about the men’s age groups combines several comparisons awkwardly. Organise the body around clear, complete comparisons between the two years, and use linking words only where they accurately show contrast or change.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “age group,” “higher than,” and “increased,” and you attempt alternatives to repeating the chart title. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, as in “top position was secured,” “the ratio … inclined,” and “the data … lay between 30 to 90 percentage.” Spelling errors such as “Cosidering,” “incresed,” and “great britain” also reduce accuracy. The range is sufficient to communicate the general topic, but imprecise expressions sometimes make the intended comparison difficult to follow. Prefer standard chart language such as “the highest proportion,” “rose to,” and “ranged from … to …,” and check spelling and percentage terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a comparison with “compared with” and a contrast introduced by “However.” Nevertheless, errors are frequent, and some sentence structures are incomplete or difficult to interpret. For example, “The year under observation are” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the ratio for former figure inclined to 83% percentage while, the later figure increased…” lacks clear grammatical links and punctuation. The final sentence fragment, “Interestingly, the data for both,” is unfinished. Articles, commas, and sentence boundaries are also inconsistently controlled. Build complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, use past-tense forms consistently when describing the years, and proofread agreement and punctuation.
