Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph shows the percentage of car driving license holders in Great Brtian by sex and age. The years included in the contrast are 1975/76 and 2006.

The data of 1975/76 shows that men outnumbered women in holding the driving licenses. The teenage range (17-20) shows 37% males and 20% females. While in the middle age range of 30-59, males had an average percentage of 80% and females with an average percentage of only 41%. The difference between the sex percentages increases in the older ranges of 60-69 with 58% males and only 16% females. The lowest percentage for male and female sex is 37% and 4% respectively, in the same 70 and over age range, still showing a major difference.

On the other hand, the year of 2006 data shows a considerable imrpovement in overcoming the gender gap. The male sex showed an increase in the middle-age range of 30-59 and a decrease in the age group of 21-29. The male percentage in the teenage group rose about only 2%.

But, the female sex showed no decrease in any age group. The female teenage and young adults category had an increase of 5% and 20% respectively. The female sex in the range 30-59 had an average increase of 37% totaling to an average of 78%, becoming near to the average male percentage of 80% in the same age group. The female percentage in the age group of 60-69 and 70+ also increased to 62% and 25

% respectively.

Overall, the gender gap was closed with the female percentage rising to the peak of 80% almost nearing the male peak of 95%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the two years and make relevant comparisons by sex and age, including the broad rise in women’s licence-holding and the narrowing gap. However, some figures and summaries are inaccurate: in 1975/76, men aged 60–69 were at 60%, not 58%, and the lowest male figure was 35%, not 37%; in 2006, the male peak was 92%, not 95%. The claim that the gap was “closed” is also too strong, since men remained ahead in every age group. Your overview is present, but it would be clearer if it highlighted the overall rise among women and older men, alongside the relatively small change among younger men. Some age-group comparisons are reported more fully than others, leaving parts of the data under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: it first describes 1975/76, then 2006, and ends with a summary. This makes the main comparison easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “Overall” help signal shifts. The organisation is coherent, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “But, the female sex showed no decrease” begins a new comparison abruptly, and “The data of 1975/76 shows” is followed by several figures without a concise overview to guide the reader. Grouping the age bands more consistently and using clearer references to the figures would improve progression and cohesion. The final overview also repeats the gender-gap point rather than drawing together the most important trends.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing comparisons and change, including “outnumbered,” “considerable improvement,” “increase,” and “decrease.” These choices generally communicate the intended meaning. However, some wording is imprecise or unnatural for chart reporting: “the teenage range” and “the female sex” are awkward, while “overcoming the gender gap” and “the gap was closed” overstate what the figures show. There are also spelling errors in “Brtian” and “imrpovement,” and “license” is less appropriate than the British English spelling “licence” used in the task. More precise terms for age groups and changes would make the account clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains clear. For instance, the sentence beginning “The difference between the sex percentages increases…” combines a comparison with supporting figures. Some grammatical errors remain, however. “The data … shows” has a subject–verb agreement problem if “data” is treated as plural, and “females with an average percentage of only 41%” is an incomplete clause after “and.” The opening “While in the middle age range…” is also a fragment, and “The male percentage … rose about only 2%” has an awkwardly formed comparison. Review sentence completeness, agreement, and the placement of modifiers; these changes would improve accuracy while preserving your range of structures.
