Student answer (Band 4.5)
The graph illustrates the proportion of people having full driving licences in Great Britian by age and gender.
Overall, men usually had licences in both 1975/76 and 2006, whereas, mostly women did not hold licences in 1975/76 as compared to 2006. Meanwhile, in 2006 women peaked in holding licencce in 40-49 age but in male they peaked at 50-59 age year group.
In 1975-76, women had around 20% of licence while men almost doubled at 39% in their teen ages. While in age group of 21-29, women and men both nearly doubled-up from their previous period. In mid 30s, they both gradually increase from last level. In their 40s, they experienced a slight decline and this pattern followed them until end.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and make an attempt at an overview, noting that men generally had higher licence rates and that women’s figures rose by 2006. However, the overview is incomplete, and several details are inaccurate or unclear: women’s highest 2006 figure was in the 40–49 group, but men peaked at 50–59 only narrowly, while the response does not report the substantial age-related changes across the chart. The description of 1975/76 is especially difficult to follow: women did not “nearly double” their rate from 17–20 to 21–29, and the claim that both sexes declined through the older groups does not match the data. The response is also 19 words below the required minimum. Select and compare the main figures more accurately, and complete the unfinished 2006 paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph about 1975/76. This gives the response some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In 1975-76” signal the intended stages. However, progression is difficult to follow because the comparisons are not clearly grouped by year or age, and the final paragraph stops after “men and women both were at their initial stage,” leaving the 2006 information undeveloped. Linking is sometimes inaccurate or awkward, as in “Meanwhile” and “While in age group of 21-29,” and the repeated references to “previous period” and “last level” do not make the comparisons clear. Organise the body into clear year-based comparisons and use explicit age-group references to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “peaked,” “age group,” and “decline,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “people having full driving licences” is less natural than “people holding full driving licences,” while “doubled-up” and “initial stage” do not clearly describe the chart’s percentages. There are also spelling errors in “Britian” and “licencce,” and “teen ages” is an imprecise label for the 17–20 group. Build a more precise set of terms for describing proportions, increases, decreases, and age bands, and check spelling before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “whereas” and the time reference “In 1975-76.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentence patterns are incomplete or awkward. The sentence beginning “While in age group of 21-29” is a fragment, and “In 2006, men and women both were at their initial stage” is unfinished and does not form a clear comparison. Other issues include the unnecessary comma in “Meanwhile, in 2006,” and the unclear construction “women and men both nearly doubled-up from their previous period.” Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check articles, word order, and punctuation. More accurate control of these basic structures would make the comparisons easier to understand.
