Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart shows the percentage of men and women in Great Britain who full driving licences.

Overall, the percenatge of people holding driving licenses increased in most age groups between the two years. Men had a higher proportion of licences holders than women in almost all age groups. In addition, people aged 30-49 had the highest percentages in 2006.

Looking at men, the proportion of driving licence holders increased among most age groups. In 2006, approximately 80% of men aged 30-39 and 40-49 held full driving licences. The figures for those aged 50-59 and 60-69 were slightly lower, at around 90% and 85% respectively. However, the percentage of men aged 17-20 was much lower, at about 35%.

Regarding women, the figures also increased significantly over the period. 2006, around 80% of women aged 30-39 and 40-49 had driving licences. The proportion was approximately 75% amo0ng those aged 50-59, while it was abiut 65% for the 21-29 age group. Women aged 70 and over had the lowest figure, at around 30%. In conclusion, driving licence owneship became more common among both gender by 2006

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You provide a relevant overview, noting that licence holding generally increased and that men had higher rates than women. You also identify the strong 2006 figures among people aged 30–49. However, the account is only partly developed: it focuses mainly on 2006 and gives little direct comparison with 1975/76, despite the chart showing substantial increases for older women and men. Some details are inaccurate or imprecise: men aged 30–39 and 40–49 were about 87% and 89% in 2006, rather than approximately 80%, and the 60–69 figure was about 91%, not 85%. The claim that men exceeded women in almost all age groups also needs qualification: men were higher in every age group, but the gap narrowed considerably in several groups. Compare both years more systematically and select accurate key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, separate paragraphs for men and women, and a concluding statement. This makes the main topic and the broad direction of change easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Looking at men,” and “Regarding women” help signal the progression, and the information is grouped sensibly by sex. To make the organisation more effective, compare the two years within each paragraph rather than mostly listing 2006 figures; this would create a clearer progression through the chart’s central comparison. The final “In conclusion” repeats the overview rather than adding a useful comparison, and the transition “2006, around 80%...” is abrupt because it lacks a phrase such as “In 2006.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “figures,” “increased significantly,” and “held full driving licences.” These choices generally communicate the data clearly, and you avoid excessive repetition by varying some references to percentages. However, there are several spelling errors, including “percenatge,” “amo0ng,” “abiut,” and “owneship,” as well as the inconsistent spelling “licences/licenses.” Some phrasing is also imprecise: “people who full driving licences” does not express the intended meaning, and “licence ownership” is less natural here than “licence holding.” Proofread carefully and use precise terms consistently. A wider range of comparison language, such as “rose by” or “remained below,” would also help describe changes across both years.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the message remains understandable. For example, the overview combines several comparisons, while “However, the percentage of men aged 17–20 was much lower” uses a clear contrast. Some grammatical errors remain. The opening sentence is missing a verb after “who” (“who full driving licences”); write “who held full driving licences.” In “2006, around 80%...,” add an introductory prepositional phrase: “In 2006, around 80%...”. The conclusion also has agreement and number problems in “among both gender”; use “among both genders” or “among men and women.” Continue checking sentence completeness, articles, and plural agreement while retaining your varied sentence structures.
