Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given graph illustrates the proportion of people with full car driving licence by gender and age in Great Britain throughout year 2006 and 1975/1976.
Overall, the percentage of men and women with driving licence has increased in 2006 as compared to 1975 however the ratio of men drivers remain higher then the femal drivers throughout the years.
In 1975 and 1976, the percentage of men drivers was more than female drivers with men aged 21 to 59 accounted for approximately 80%. men aged 30 to 39 added most to this ratio that was more than 80%. The lowest percentage (about 35%) of male drivers in 1975 to 1976 was that of the men aged 70 and over while young adults, aged 17 to 20 remained second lowest added less than 40%. Female drivers on the other hand, barely crossed 40% which was only among women aged 21 to 39. The lowest percentage of female drivers was also that of women over 70 but they hardly reached more than 5%.
in year 2006 meanwhile, the proportion of women drivers increased significantly with women aged 30 to 49 nearly reaching 80%. Men aged 30 to 69 on the other hand, make more than 80% in the total, still remaing the highest among both genders. Another important aspect of the graph is that driving among men and women aged 17 to 20 still remain quit unpopular, making hardly upyo 40%. The percentage of men and women licence holders aged 70+ increases to about 70% and 30% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You provide a clear overview: licence ownership rose between the two periods, and men remained ahead of women. The response also selects useful comparisons, including the high figures for men aged 21–59 in 1975/76, the very low figure for women aged 70 and over, and the substantial rise among older women by 2006. Most reported figures and trends are consistent with the chart. However, some statements are too broad: “the percentage of men and women … has increased” overlooks the fall among men aged 21–29, from about 78% to 70%. The claim that women aged 30–49 nearly reached 80% also misses the lower figure for those aged 50–59, at about 74%. More precise comparisons across age groups would strengthen an otherwise well-supported summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised into an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs comparing the periods, so the reader can follow the main progression. Time markers such as “In 1975 and 1976” and “in year 2006 meanwhile” help signal the shift between data sets, while “on the other hand” introduces contrasts. To make the organisation more consistently clear, use parallel phrasing when comparing men and women and avoid linking unrelated points in the same sentence. For example, the final sentence combines the figures for people aged 70 and over without clearly distinguishing the two sexes. Some transitions are also awkward or repetitive; clearer topic sentences and more precise references would make the cohesion feel more flexible and less dependent on contrast markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “increased significantly,” and “lowest percentage,” which allows you to describe the main patterns. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “Another important aspect.” However, some word choices and collocations are imprecise or unnatural: “added most to this ratio,” “make more than 80% in the total,” and “hardly reached more than 5%.” “Ratio” is not the right term for a percentage here, and “drivers” can be confused with the number of people rather than the share holding licences. Spelling slips such as “remaing” and “femal” also reduce accuracy. Prefer concise, standard chart language such as “accounted for,” “stood at,” and “licence holders.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “although,” and “on the other hand,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. However, some errors in agreement, tense, articles, and sentence construction remain. For example, “the ratio … remain higher” needs a singular verb, while “men aged 30 to 69 … make more than 80%” has an unsuitable verb form for describing chart data. The opening phrase “throughout year 2006 and 1975/1976” also has an awkward time construction, and “the percentage … has increased in 2006 as compared to 1975” uses tense and comparison structures imprecisely. Capitalisation at the start of paragraphs and after full stops is inconsistent. Check each sentence for subject–verb agreement and use past-tense reporting consistently.
