IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graphs below show the percentage of people holding full driving licences in Great Britain by age and sex.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Full car driving licence holders: by sex and age

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The provided graphs illustrate the proportion of individuals who were holding full driving licences in the United Kindom in 1975/76 and 2006 by age and sex.

Overall, it is evident that men dominated women in all the age groups in terms of receiving license. Additionally, both male and female accounded for a significant increase, especially women in receiving licence compared to past.

Looking at the bar diagram more closely, those who were 30-39 recorded for the largest proportion in 1975/76, while elder people had the lowest percentage with around 3% in female and 35% in male. There is a considerable rise in every age group of female. Similarly, although male had a substantial proportion in the past, it also inclined nominallly in 2006.

On the ther hand, there was an average proprotion in both male and female, who were 17-20 age. It demonstrates that adults had lowest proportion of driving licence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad comparison between the sexes and note that women’s licence-holding increased, which are relevant features. However, the overview is too general and partly inaccurate: men did not have a higher rate in every age group in 2006, since women slightly exceeded men among 30–39-year-olds (78% versus 87% actually men remain higher; the clearest issue is that the response gives no precise comparisons). More importantly, the claim that male figures “inclined nominally” overlooks substantial rises among older men, such as from 60% to 91% for ages 60–69. The description of 30–39 as the largest group in 1975/76 is also incorrect; men aged 40–49 were highest at about 81%. Select the main peaks, lows, and changes accurately, and support the overview with key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Looking at the bar diagram more closely” signal movement between sections. However, progression within the details is limited: the response shifts from the 30–39 group to older people, then to women’s increases, without systematically comparing age groups or years. “On the ther hand” introduces a contrast that is not clearly established, and “It demonstrates” has an unclear reference. Grouping the data by age range or by sex and year, then using comparisons such as “whereas” and “by contrast” precisely, would make the relationships easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “substantial,” “dominated,” and “significant increase.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing chart data: “receiving licence” suggests obtaining a licence rather than holding one, and “inclined nominally” is not a natural way to describe a small change. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “United Kindom,” “accounded,” “nominally,” “ther,” and “proprotion.” These do not make the response impossible to understand, but they reduce precision and fluency. Use standard chart language such as “the percentage of licence holders,” “rose slightly,” and “accounted for,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “those who were 30-39” and a concessive structure beginning “although.” The main message is generally understandable, but grammatical control is uneven. For example, “men dominated women” lacks a clear comparison structure, while “both male and female accounded for a significant increase” has an awkward subject and verb pattern. In “those who were 30-39 recorded for the largest proportion,” the verb pattern is also faulty. Practise accurate comparative constructions (“the proportion for men was higher than that for women”) and ensure subjects match the intended meaning. More consistently controlled sentence patterns would make the comparisons clearer.
